Investigated the etiology of obesity and how gut microbiota affects nutrient metabolism and absorption. Researched a possible mechanisms involving the promotion of energy expenditure via the G-protein coupled receptors GPR43 and GPR41. These receptors played important roles in insulin signaling, and sympathetic nervous system activation. Proposed treatments via GPR43 and GPR41 agonists as potential anti-obesity therapeutics.
Worked in collaboration with 6 other team members to further our understanding of the unique ways in which different ethnocultural groups experience food security. Main focus on identifying barriers concerning household consumption of fruits and vegetables with their cultural diet. Findings were reported to the Richmond Food Security Society.
Blog LinkProvided practical (and science-based) nutritional planning for the Jungle Marathon ultra-endurance event. Research needed to be effectively communicated to athletes without a scientific background. Estimated energy needs and recommendations on fueling before, during and after each stage. Food safety, hydration, electrolytes and other relevant considerations were researched. Presented information in an academic poster setting.
