This website was my very first coding project outside of school work. I have always wanted to build something simple where I can showcase the things I am passionate about. UBC announced an e-portfolio competition which gave the extra motivation to start and complete this project.

The ability to see your creative come alive piece by piece drives the need to continue working on it until it is perfect.

What Happened Last Night?

Vancouver Game Jam 2015

The Vancouver Global Game Jam was the first coding event I participated in after just 3 months of learning computer science. The game was created based on the theme “What do I do now?” with a group of first-timers. The game was developed in Unity3D and scripted with C# in under 48 hours. As a group with no prior experience to Unity or C#, I am very proud of the finished product, my team members and myself. Everyone had specific development roles and I primarily dealt with the enemy AI; character movement, collisions, rotation; and trigger events for the GUI text.

This experience has taught me (and the group as a whole) the utmost importance of version control when doing collaborative work. The challenges associated with trying to work on a single project definitely sprung up quick and motivated us to learn version control (eg. Git) before our next hackathon. The greatest success of this game jam was that it proved to ourselves that even with very little programming under our belt, we can develop a working and finished project. We all learned a great deal and inspired us to continue participating in hackathons.

The Food is Right

Canadian Open Data Experience 2015

A neat nutrition application built for Android that helps raise nutritional awareness and healthy lifestyles. The app draws nutrient values from several open federal datasets and players try to guess which food item is lower in calories. Collect fruit badges by answering correctly and compare with friends!

Created in 48 hours during the Canadian Open Data Experience (CODE) and based on the theme of improving quality of life through healthy living. The hackathon provided an opportunity to learn about the vast amount of information that is publicly available and how to use it to improve the lives of others.

The Sexy Driver

Northwest Hacks 2015

The Sexy Driver monitors driving and helps users become aware of their driving habits, fuel consumption and their impact on the environment. The faster the car accelerates, more fuel is consumed and generates higher levels of emission. The app will calculate how much more fuel was used as well as CO2 emissions a single trip. By generating and displaying their statistics, users can challenge themselves to improve their driving.

The application uses the accelerometer and GPS location services to determine if the car is in acceleration. A faster acceleration will trigger the accelerometer to record the instance. At the end of the trip, a calculation is made to determine how much fuel was consumed and the carbon emissions.

This project was developed as a team of five during the 36 hour Northwest hacks held at UBC. Some of my major contributions include implementing a parser to parse vehicle fuel consumption data, designing the UI and graphics, and determining how much acceleration affects fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

There's nothing sexier than helping mother nature!

Parkbook

Find and review Parks in Vancouver!

Parkbook is an web application that helps users find, rate and review parks around Vancouver. By crowd sourcing comments and reviews, users can learn which parks are dog friendly, more quiet for picnics or which has facilities for basketball or tennis. Users can simply look for any park with the suggestive search bar or find the nearest park.

The application is built on the MEAN stack (MongoDB, ExpressJS, AngularJS and NodeJS). Parkbook features easy login and registration via Facebook login and leverages Google Maps API for routing and plotting. Information is parsed from the City of Vancouver Parks Listing data catalogue.

This project was completed as a part of the CPSC 310 course requirement at UBC.

AngelHacks Seattle 2015

Supported is a Pebble smartwatch App that works alongside your Android phone. It is designed as a discrete watch face that acts as a silent alarm. Users who are wearing a Pebble watch can easily press the emergency contact button which then sets off three actions:

Sends distress texts to closets family and friends with current GPS location

Initiates a call to police

Locates the nearest hospital

The UI has small dots on the watch face to indicate that the app is running. When the emergency contact button is pressed, a second and third dot will be displayed to indicate successful SMS delivery and that your phone is placing a call to either 911 or any other number.

In future iterations of the app, we are hoping to include audio recording to collect evidence and customizable texts to contacts in situations where it is not an emergency (maybe to get out of awkward situations by asking friends to call you - or even calling your own phone).

Hack the North 2015 - Waterloo

Bored? Lazy? Don't want to think of something to do? 'Go' is designed to help suggest activities based on your personal lifestyle and how you're feeling the day you login to the site.

Upon user registration, they are prompted with a small questionnaire to guage the user's activity level, whether if they prefer being outdoors or indoors, if they'd rather go sky-diving or relax on the beach. Once the profile is setup, the next time the user sees different moods to select. An activity is suggested based on their profile and the mood.

Currently the suggestion is biased towards the more popular activities so then users can meet up and participate with other user's doing the same thing. If a user decides to go forward with the suggestion and enjoys it, it is saved to their history and future suggestions will be similar to his/her history.

Candy Dance

Vancouver Global Game Jam 2016

A two player infinite side scroller, where one player tries to collect as many candies as possible. The second player acts as the spirt ghost trying to stop the candy man by throwing an assortment of attacks! How many candies can you get?

The game was developed using JavaScript and the Phaser game engine. Using Phaser was incredibly fun as it is lightweight and easy to pick up. For simple 2D games like this one, I think it will be my go-to for game development.

Originally we wanted to incorporate a backend with SocketIO to allow for 4 players in one game. Where 3 players each control one direction key of the candy man, thus having to work together to navigate through the traps and world objects. It creates a bigger challenge and would be really fun to see players scrambling together. Unfortunately we were unable to complete this within the 48 hours so we will work on sometime in the future. But for now, it's still pretty fun with 2 players on one computer!

Just Choose Me

nwHacks 2016

What is the point of career fairs if recruiters tell potential candidates to just apply online, often with no response back? Recruiters are sick of the old-fashioned system of paper-copy resumes, in which they must manually scan each application, and individually enter data into their recruitment database (not to mention those long portfolio URLs!). Online application lack the personal interaction with passionate candidates that cannot be encapsulated on a piece of paper. The goal of the project was to simplify and speed up the process between meeting a potential intern/employee and getting that first interview offer to them.

Candidates are able to enter information about themselves, such as a picture, resume URLs, LinkedIn URLs, and their top three projects. From there, the information is bundled into a QR Code which recruiters can quickly and easily scan. Recruiters can also add additional comments such as "This student is looking for a Fall 2016 internship" to each scanned candidate. Recruiters can then review all the Candidates scanned and view them in a list.

The APIs for saving candidate information, authentication, authorization, are all built using Node.js. The front end of the WebApp portion of the stack was done using html5, jQuery, jade, and css. The Android app uses the REST APIs from the Nodejs web server.
